Beyond Therapy: How Writing Emotional Detox Lead Me to a Better Path

It was late June when I pitched my book Emotional Detox to Adams Media, a division of Simon & Schuster. I told them I would like to write a book about how our emotions get processed, what happens when they don’t and could they really become toxic. Their reply was, sounds interesting, why don’t you go ahead and do the research and get back to us. I was thrilled at their response. I had pitched other things before which they politely said, no thank you. Either they already had another writer working on a similar topic or just were not interested. So when they told me to go forward and do the research I knew I had their attention.
Since Emotional Detox was my seventh book, I knew exactly where to begin. I had already been pre-exposed to some of the pioneers who were spearheading the subject. It was just a matter of relocating the information while checking in with any new studies and ideas which had come to the forefront. Most of my time would be spent on learning about emotional trauma, what happens in the body and how it gets released. About six weeks into my research something catastrophic happened, I would discover my husband was having an affair.
All my new found research and writing would come to a screeching halt. The shock, pain and fear was so intense, I could barely walk, sit, eat, sleep let alone read or write. I lost twenty-three pounds in eight weeks off my size four body. For the first time in my life, I could not predict what was next, I was emotionally traumatized. I had no choice but to tell Adams Media the truth, my life was a mess and I would have to hold off on the project.
Over the next couple of months, as the details of the affair unfolded, I would find myself becoming traumatized by each new revelation. I did my best to go about the daily tasks of being a mom, teaching and keeping up with the few phone clients I had on my schedule. I needed to be strong, not just for my children but also, for the possibility that I might have to learn how to survive on my own.
The holidays came and went. I managed to purchase and wrap all the gifts for my children, show up at family events as the obvious elephant in the room. January came and something about the idea of starting a new leaf made me consider blowing the dust off my computer and beginning again. This is how the C.L.E.A.N.S.E. formula, the seven steps to releasing toxicity while increasing ease featured in Emotional Detox came to be.
I choose to use the acronym not because I thought it was cute or catchy (although I have to admit it is), I did it because when you are in trauma it is difficult to remember anything. Although therapy was helping, it was once a week and what I learned is to truly detox, emotionally it needs to be a daily, simple practice.
Eventually, I would share the tools with clients with great success. Client feedback gave me hope and motivation to continue, trust in the process and to be consistent even when I felt “normal.” As I practiced the C.L.E.A.N.S.E. I would receive insight no book or study could ever offer. I was looking at the healing process from inside out. Emotional Detox would eventually move forward into publication, however, the learnings did not cease. I would continue to write down what I was learning on a daily basis, creating talking points for my book tour. Things were changing in a way I hadn’t expected and if you must know about what happened to my marriage, I guess you are just going to have to read the book.
