Authors Interviewing Characters: Maria E. Andreu
You’ve Got Mail meets a YA Beach Read with a bookish mystery at its heart in the newest rom-com from Maria E. Andreu. The ideal next read for fans of Emily Henry, Kasie West, and Jennifer E. Smith.
Julieta isn’t looking for her Romeo—but she is writing about love. When her summer writing teacher encourages the class to publish their work online, the last thing she’s expecting is to get a notification that her rom-com has a mysterious new contributor, Happily Ever Drafter. Julieta knows that happily ever afters aren’t real. (Case in point: her parents’ imploding marriage.) But then again, could this be her very own meet-cute?
As things start to heat up in her fiction, Julieta can’t help but notice three boys in her real life: her best friend’s brother (aka her nemesis), the boy next door (well, to her abuela), and her oldest friend (who is suddenly looking . . . hot?). Could one of them be her mysterious collaborator? But even if Julieta finds her Romeo, she’ll have to remember that life is full of plot twists. . . .
From the author of Love in English comes a fresh take on love and romance, and a reminder to always be the author of your own life story.
Author Maria E. Andreu interviews Character Julieta
Maria: I have to say, I’m a little envious that this fabulous summer writing program for high school students exists. How are you liking it?
Julieta: It’s awesome. Also a little terrifying. I want to be good enough to publish my writing, but this program makes me realize there are a lot of writers who are probably better.
Maria: I can relate. Just keep going.
Julieta: That’s what my writing teacher Paige says.
Maria: We’re friends, so we offer similar advice. So, you have a lot of interesting things going on this summer. Suddenly you’re surrounded by attractive guys. How is that?
Julieta: Amazing! And confusing. One minute I think I know which one I’d like to be with, but then the next minute something unexpected happens with another one. It’s kinda the only thing I can think about.
Maria: I can also relate to that. I once spent an entire summer writing Menudo love stories in a pink-paged notebook, and those guys weren’t even in my actual life. They were just singers I watched in concert sometimes. If I had to see them every day, my head would have been spinning.
Julieta: Does it get better?
Maria: Honestly? Not really. When you love that way, you tend to be the type of person who gets swept up by the idea of love. And it can lead to said head-spinning.
Julieta: Mine is, definitely. But it’s fun. Although my friend Ivy says I’m giving them too much importance. That I should listen to what my own heart says.
Maria: She’s a smart one, that Ivy. It must be cool to have a friend like her.
Julieta: It’s the best.

When Maria is not writing or speaking, you can find her reading post-apocalyptic fiction and singing to her plants or organizing her beautiful wooden writing boxes. She wishes she zip-lined more. When she plays “Two Truths and a Lie,” she’ll tell you the story of how she was once almost eaten by lions. But she won’t tell you if that’s the truth or the lie.
