The Power of Positive Thinking and Affirmations

As authors, finding our writing voice can sometimes be challenging—especially during uncertain times. Similarly, mastering the art of positive thinking when we don’t know what the next five minutes might bring can be challenging too. Positive thinking gives us an extreme advantage during times of extreme stress; yet I believe most individuals, including authors, do not use this strategy to their advantage.

Creativity and a more optimistic perspective go hand in hand when as authors, we are trying to practice our craft, bring value to the reader experience, and joy to our passion. However, as human beings, we tend to focus our time and energy on what we don’t have, rather than on what we do have. Throw in some catastrophic change like a pandemic and we are naturally waiting for the other shoe to drop like everyone else.

During any type of change, particularly the unwanted kind, the first step towards moving away from negative thoughts towards more positive ones is acceptance.  This does not mean you are necessarily happy about a situation like a pandemic that has disrupted your life—or happy all the time. That is unrealistic. It simply means that you don’t resist, reject, or deny new circumstances. If you accept that unexpected change can happen, good or bad, you build a foundation for a more flexible mindset and enhance your ability to respond to changes productively rather than react to them impulsively. This can include responding to world events, changes in our own worlds, and the ideas that shape our writing.

Affirmations are a powerful strategy for successfully navigating change, encouraging more optimistic thinking, and supporting our creative energy. When you repeat affirmations, you prime your mind for more opportunistic thinking which can enhance the writing process and fuel our creativity when we are stalled. Author Louise Hay dedicated her life to helping us understand how the thoughts we think and the words we speak shape our world and future. Author James Clear reiterated this when he said “just as we are what we eat, we are what we think.” Our thoughts are just thoughts and we don’t need to be held captive by the emotionality of them.

Next time you are suffering from writer’s block and need a little encouragement try repeating these positive affirmations from Zanna Keithley (ZannaKeithly.com), to help get you back on track.

I am a talented and skilled writer

Ideas come to me easily and effortlessly

My writing is never stuck, or stagnant, it is constantly evolving

My heart is at the center of my creative thinking, I am following my heart

I am creative, passionate, and inspired

My words don’t need to be perfect to be worthy and meaningful

I am worthy of success as a writer

Until next time happy writing, and stay super awesome!

Best,

Jane

Butter-Side Up: How I Survived My Most Terrible Year and Created My Super Awesome Life

How often have you heard someone say, “I hate change?” That’s because most people do.

But the reality is, whether we like it or not, life puts us all through changes―some challenging, and many joyful―that shape our day-to-day experiences. Sometimes, though, in the blink of an eye, the unthinkable can happen. This begs the question: when the unexpected occurs, how do you successfully navigate change so you can land butter side up when life turns the tables?

Butter Side Up is not self-help jargon; it is edutainment for the soul. Jane Enright’s true story of surviving three life-altering events in the span of twelve months, losing everything, and coming out the other end stronger and more resilient than ever before is compelling and riveting―and full of sage advice for how to do the same. A feel-good story that everyone can relate to and learn from, Butter Side Up shows that there can be happiness and joy after unplanned change―and a super awesome life, too.
