September: Reading With Rochelle Weinstein

October 1, 2024 | By | Reply More

Hello Readers & Friends,

I’m not going to lie. September’s been a rough month. That’s me. Real and authentic. While dealing with some personal family issues, our beloved North Carolina was ravaged by Hurricane Helene. The devastating footage is heartbreaking. My prayers go out to the western Carolina community and all those who was affected by this storm. I didn’t get to read as much as I would have liked; some of these books I read earlier in the year before things got crazy. I hope you’ll consider adding them to you TBR. We’ve got some winners.

Echoes of Us, Joy Jordan-Lake

Simon’s Island, Georgia 1942. Three men bound by one woman, and the two sisters on a quest to find out why.

What to expect: Secrets and broken dreams, love and longing, and the heartache and sacrifice that comes from war. Jordan-Lake does a masterful job creating compelling characters (female pilots!) and a story brimming with courage and hope.

Available October 8

The Love Elixir of Augusta Stern, Lynda Cohen Loigman

A newly retired pharmacist retires in Florida and comes across the man who broke her heart.

What to expect: A dual timeline, a dash of magic potions, and lovable characters complete Loigman’s brilliantly written tale of second chances.

Available October 8

The Lightning Bottles, Marissa Stapley

When musicians and lovers Jane and Elijah meet a devastating end, in walks Hen, a young girl who leads Jane to find presumed dead Elijah.

What to expect: I loved Stapley’s last novel, Lucky, and this one doesn’t disappoint. Stapley writes a pitch-perfect tale, one where a song captures your heart and doesn’t let go.

The Incompletes, Linda Smolkin

Emma Meade picks up a guitar for the first time after losing her brother. Inside, she finds a list of eight criminals who escaped punishment (with their names crossed out) except one.

What to expect:  A story of justice and moral issues, and heavy-hitting topics such as the Holocaust, drugs, and grief.

Available Now

Real Americans, Rachel Khong

A Chinese-American generational story of race, class, and family.

What to expect: Well drawn-out characters, family secrets, and “freezing” time. Plus a major nod toward in vitro fertilization and genetic engineering. The writing is flawless.

Available Now

The Life Impossible, Matt Haig

Retired math teacher Grace Winters inherits a home in Ibiza and sets off on a journey of healing and self-discovery.

What to expect: Matt Haig’s brilliant mind sprinkled with magical realism.

Exposure, Ava Dellaira

Nick finally realizes his Hollywood dream when an incident from his past upends everything.

What to expect: This one had me flipping pages and into the minds of characters Annie, Juliette, Jesse, and Nick, all who share their conflicting perspectives of one fateful night.

Available Now

The Trade Off, Samantha Greene Woodruff

In 1920s Wall Street, Bea is secretly the brains behind her brother’s stock market job, until she predicts the great Crash and risks losing everything.

What to expect: There’s no sophomore slump for Woodruff who deftly spins an inspiring tale of one woman and her quest to succeed in a business dominated by men. Loved the Jewish representation and the author’s ability to transport and inspire.

Available October 8

Here One Moment, Liane Moriarty

The passengers of a plane come across a woman who predicts the age and circumstance of their deaths.

What to expect: May be triggering for some. Death is an uncomfortable subject, but Moriarty tackles the subject through her dimensional characters with grace and even joy.
