We Are Writing A New Story Right Now

I’m sitting in my dining room viewing the world like most of you are viewing the world, from the inside looking out. 

We see a world falling apart. Many things have been removed from our routine: dressing for work, socializing, church, shopping. Some say they can’t wait until it goes back to normal. The insightful ones know that will never happen and are thinking about what a new normal will look like. 

But if you’re anything like me, and you are, as a writer, you know the secret. It’s a secret writers have always known…that worlds are created in the pauses. Busyness begets more busyness but silence is where the magic happens. And my smallness knows this. When my gentle giant bigness is ready to birth a new idea, my Jack Russell smallness starts yapping to cover up it up with noise. And it used to be easy- distractions were everywhere. But now the distractions have vanished and the noise is so obviously self-induced. Now, I have to pull myself away from the silence to hear the yapping and it’s so obvious that the responsibility falls on me. No more excuses.

Silence for creation

In this great pause for humanity, we have an opportunity that only silence can give us, to connect to our creativity. We are seeding a renaissance if we seize this time we have right now.

Human imagination is a powerhouse of energy and opportunity. It had been inhibited with the frenetic pace of life, but now in our pause we have no excuse not to connect to new ideas, new solutions, and new stories. For me I’ve realized the stories I wanted to write that mirrored the person I wanted to be have shifted. 

As writers, we can’t help but put our individuality in our pieces. That’s what makes them great. And as we change as people, as we grow and evolve, our stories change too. I look at books I wrote three years ago and see all the things I would do differently now. But that’s ok. That is the evolution of a woman. I am fortunate that my book series allowed me to portray a young woman’s evolution into her own power. There isn’t one among us that doesn’t take that journey from giving our power away to slowly reeling it back in to where it belongs-within our heart.

It’s the same with our creative power. We’ve given it away to routine and schedules but now our imagination is whispering for attention. Have you noticed a desire to expand your creativity into other endeavors? I’ve always resisted the label of “writer” even though that’s what takes up most of my time. But now, color has been calling to me in the form of all things involved with paint. And the interesting thing is that the connection to my creativity through painting has enriched my writing even more.

While you have time at home, can you use your creative muscle to bridge this time of dissolution with an idea for a rebirthing? The renaissance is coming. What might you like to contribute as a writer or simply as a creator? This is a very poignant time in history that we are living. If you have children, your actions during this time are shaping their future. You are the fulcrum between your ancestors and your children. What an extraordinary position to hold. 

You are inspiring to those around you-your family, your children. What you are living now, how you respond and what you create during this unprecedented time will be your story of resiliency, faith and heart. Make it a good one.
