National Colloquium on Indian Women Writers in English

On November 12, 13 2011, the National Colloquium on Indian Women Writers in English hosted by Delhi Sahitya Academy and Department of English, Gujarat University, was held in Ahmedabad, India. 25 of the country’s foremost women writers and poets came.  Shobha De was the keynote speaker. The purpose was:

“to read, recite, discuss, talk, demonstrate and speak about their experiences, disappointments, struggles and success in their literary journey to a more woman-centric writing from a male-centric writing.”

Some of the women writers included were: Esther David and Kajal Oza Vaidya, Sudha Rai, Bharathi Harishankar, Tulsi Badrinath, Harish Narang, Rupalee Burk, Shashi Deshpande, Noor Zaheer, Arundhati Subramanyam, Tejdeep Kaur Menon, Parul Shah and Usha Bende.

To quote from the DNAIndia.com article:

“Dr Kamla said that it is matter of pride that Indian English writers have attained global acknowledgement and also women writers in Indian languages have also made their place in the world. She said that with the power of translation, even regional language literature like Gujarati, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil and Kannada are gaining importance beyond Indian boundaries.”

“Shobha De said that it is time to make good education accessible to every woman. “In many cultures women have to learn two languages – first the one she is conversant with and another of silence […].”

Deepti Naval

Deepti Naval, an Indian actress, has published a collection of short stories. She is a poet, painter, photographer and women’s rights advocate.

Her book is entitled, The Mad Tibetan: Stories From Then And Now. Deepti Naval’s passion and focus in writing is talked about in this video by The Bollywood Show. See these two beautiful pictures of her.

Shobhaa De

Shobbhaa De is a prominent celebrity in India. She’s the author of several books including Bollywood Night.

Shobhaa De was in Dubai for the 30th annual Sharjah International Book Fair. Over 100,000 Indian books would be featured. (For those who may not know, the Gulf has a huge Indian population.)
