Authors Interviewing Characters: Amber Daulton
Kidnapped by the enemy. Bought by the jefe. Will his smoldering touch thaw her frozen heart?
Rubén Lozano, the new leader of the Lozano Cartel, craves peace amidst a legacy of bloodshed and death. He never expected to find his ex-lover, Drina Cabrera, in the clutches of his vicious rivals. Her haunted eyes compel him to rescue her, but freeing her is another matter.
After five months of captivity, Drina trades one captor for another. Though she succumbs to Rubén’s masterful touch, the bittersweet memory of her daughter and the life she was stolen from is a constant wedge between them.
When Rubén’s darkest secret comes out, he will have to wash his hands in crimson. Will Drina let her king face the danger alone, or stand at his side as his cartel queen?
– Book two in the dark romance series, the Lozano Cartel. All the books can be read as a standalone, but are part of an interconnected series.
Character Chat with Rubén Lozano and Drina Cabrera
Following the events of Lost in His Spiderwebs, Amber Daulton sits down with Rubén and Drina in their living room for a long overdue talk. Amber has been dreading this conversation.
Amber: Thank you for welcoming me into your home. I hope you’re both doing well.
Rubén: [snorts] Better than expected. After the hell you put us through, we’re lucky to be alive. I’m half-surprised you had the guts to come here.
Amber: [hesitates] Well, the increased guard activity at the gate was daunting. All those men and guns, ugh. [shudders]
Drina: [pats his arm] Everything is all right now, Rubén. As horrible as my kidnapping was, I’m grateful it happened. Otherwise, we never would’ve found our way back to one another. You wouldn’t know about Sera, and this little one wouldn’t be on the way. [pats her slightly rounded stomach]
Rubén: [sighs] You’re right. Finding out Sera is my biological daughter was the shock of the century. When we broke up all those years ago, I didn’t realize you were pregnant. This time, I’m going to be involved in raising our child. I’m looking forward to it.
Amber: Congratulations on the pregnancy. Are you hoping for a girl or boy?
Rubén: A boy. I need an heir to take over the family business once I die or when he’s old enough for me to retire. It’s tradition for a male to lead, so if Drina and I are only blessed with daughters, the responsibility will fall to my oldest nephew. My sister, Carlota, does not want that to happen.
Drina: [purses her lips] I’d rather we have a little girl. I don’t want my children involved in the cartel. It’s far too dangerous. As much as I adore Carlota and her boys, I have to think of my own children first. If I have a son, I’m going to be so scared for him.
Amber: [winces] You’re both stuck between a rock and a hard place. Whether you have a boy or girl, it’s going to be problematic. I swear, as your author, I’ll do my best to make sure your child grows up as happy as possible.
Drina: Gracias. We appreciate that.
Amber: So, the family business. The Lozano Cartel. You’re making changes, right, Rubén?
Rubén: [nods] No more indiscriminate killing. No more involving innocents in a gang war. I want peace. The changes aren’t popular with some of my underlings, but after a few of my former councilmen failed to usurp my throne a while back, the grumblings have ceased. For the most part, everyone has accepted the policy changes.
Amber: That’s wonderful, and just what I wanted for you. Now, tell me, who do you think among your group of friends and family should be featured in my next story?
Drina: Lourdes, for sure. She endured a horrible marriage with Jacobo and deserves someone decent in her life.
Rubén: I agree. Even though Jacobo was my brother, he was a prick. He abused Lourdes in ways that made me sick. My best friend, Enrique, has loved that woman for years. Now that she’s a widow, Enrique is thinking about making his move. [scowls at Amber] So you better let him win Lourdes’s heart.
Amber: [grins wickedly] I have no reason to stand in Enrique’s way, but he’s not going to have an easy road ahead. He’ll have to prove himself the man she needs.
Drina: [laughs softly] Just as Rubén had to prove himself with me.
Rubén: [rubs the back of his neck and groans] This is going to be a mess. A disaster. Whatever hell you put Enrique and Lourdes through, I’m going to have to clean it up. I just know it.
Amber: Well, you are the boss. Enrique is your responsibility.
Rubén: [stands up] And that ends the conversation. Amber, you’re welcome to join Drina for lunch, but I have to get back to work.
Amber: [stands as well] Of course, and lunch sounds great.
[Once Rubén leaves, Amber and Drina head to the kitchen and keep talking. But that naughty conversation is best kept between them.]
