Mastering Intentions: 10 Practices to Amplify Your Power and Lead with Lasting Impact
by Bianca D’Alessio
When I was younger, I used to tell myself that one day I would write a book. It wasn’t because I already knew what story I wanted to tell — but because writing was how I learned to understand myself and process my thoughts. It was the only way I could quiet the noise and uncover what I truly felt. Even as a teenager, when the world around me felt chaotic or uncertain, I’d sit with a journal and write it all down — my fears, my dreams, my questions.
I didn’t know what that book would say. I couldn’t yet see how my story would unfold or what lessons I’d eventually have to share. But deep down, I believed that someday, when the time was right, the words would come.
That belief stayed with me as I grew older. I built a career in real estate, first struggling to find my footing, then eventually building one of the top brokerage teams in New York and managing a multibillion-dollar portfolio. Along the way, I experienced my share of failures — professional missteps, difficult partnerships, deals that fell through, seasons where nothing seemed to go right. Each time, I rebuilt. And each time, I learned something new about resilience, leadership, and the power of aligning my actions with my values.
And throughout it all, I kept writing. At the end of long days, journaling captured the lessons as they came to me, reflections on how far I’d come, and where I still wanted to go. Writing continued to be the place where I made sense of it all.
As my career progressed, I found myself speaking more — to teams, to industry peers, to young professionals just getting started. Public speaking helped me articulate the principles I’d been living quietly for so long. It also introduced me to new networks and communities of like-minded people who valued authenticity, growth, and resilience as much as I did. But the most unexpected gift of speaking was that I discovered the power of leading with vulnerability.
The more I was willing to share not just my successes but also my struggles — the failures, the doubts, the lessons learned the hard way — the deeper I connected with people. Audiences didn’t just want inspiration; they wanted truth. They wanted to know that it was okay to fall and get back up. And every time I shared a piece of my story, someone would come up to me afterward and say, “I needed to hear that.”
It was through those conversations that I realized: it was time to start sharing my story more broadly. The book I had once dreamed of writing now had a clear purpose.
I decided to write Mastering Intentions because I wanted to create the book I wish I’d had earlier in my career — something that would have reminded me, and anyone else facing challenges, that adversity is not the end. That the setbacks we experience are often the raw material from which resilience and greatness are built. That no matter where you’re starting from, you can rebuild, refocus, and rise.
At first, the idea of writing a book was intimidating. My schedule was already packed running a business, managing a team, filming a television show, and maintaining my personal life. I didn’t know where to start or how to fit in one more thing, let alone something as monumental as a book.
But then I reminded myself of the very principles I teach my team: you don’t have to know the whole plan to take the first step. You just have to begin.
I knew I didn’t want this to just be a memoir, nor did I want it to feel like a generic business book. My vision was to create something deeply personal yet highly actionable — a guide anyone could turn to when they needed to reset, refocus, and rebuild with purpose.
The writing process itself was humbling. It forced me to revisit moments in my life I thought I’d already moved past — moments of doubt, failure, and fear — and look at them with honesty and compassion. Some nights the words came easily. Other nights, I stared at a blank page for hours, fighting the urge to quit.
Halfway through the manuscript, I hit a wall of self-doubt. That old, familiar inner voice — what I call my “brain bully” — started whispering that no one would care what I had to say, or that people would see the book as a vanity project. I had to consciously silence that brain bully, the same way I teach readers to in the book, and remind myself why I was doing this: for the countless people who had reached out over the years asking how to keep going when it feels impossible.
That thought carried me through to the finish line.
When I submitted the final manuscript to my publisher, it was one of the most emotional moments of my career. I’d written the book I wished someone had handed me years ago — part guide, part manifesto, and part love letter to anyone who has ever doubted themselves.
In the months that followed, we finalized the cover, edited the final draft, and prepared for the launch. Holding the finished book in my hands for the first time was surreal. I thought back to that younger version of myself, sitting with her journal, trying to make sense of the world, quietly hoping that one day she’d have something to say worth sharing.
Writing Mastering Intentions taught me the very lessons it’s meant to teach others: that anything worth building takes discipline, courage, and intention. That your story — even the messy, imperfect parts — can inspire someone else. That our voices matter, and the more we share them, the more we give others permission to share theirs.
For me, Mastering Intentions is more than just a book. It’s a declaration that our past doesn’t define us, and that who we become is a choice we get to make every day.
I hope Mastering Intentions inspires others as much as writing it inspired me — to own their story, to lead with vulnerability and courage, and to live aligned with their values and purpose.
