Patricia Leavy interviews Ella Sinclair
PL: The world has been captivated by your fairy-tale romance since legendary actor Finn Forrester proposed to you on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. There was a collective sigh of envy heard around the world as we all gushed at the romantic scene. Tell us something about your relationship.
ES: Finn is the best man I’ve ever known. He’s all the things the world thinks he is—talented, handsome, sexy, elegant. But he’s so much more. He’s the person who I want to be with for all the highs and lows. A true partner. Finn makes me more of who I am, not less, and I adore him for it.
PL: What’s the most romantic story you’ve ever heard?
ES: My dear friend Albie Hughes, the late actor, once told a bunch of us how he met is his wife Margaret, the love of his life. It was at a party in London. Something completely uptight and pretentious, a total upper-crust soiree, which was definitely not Albie’s style. Margaret ended up there by chance, with no idea what kind of party it was, so she showed up in a simple dress with a homemade blueberry pie. Albie was hit by lightning the moment he saw her standing there, so beautifully out of place. Eventually, he spotted her at the dessert table and sidled over to her. He took a piece of the pie she’d made and they started talking. He said he fell madly in love with her on the spot. Ever since Finn and I heard the story, blueberries make us think of love. Epic, crazy love. Maybe it’s silly, but they’ve become special to us, so much so that we had blueberry preserves as the filling in our wedding cake.
PL: You are writing a philosophical treatise on love. Tell us about it.
ES: I used to be afraid of love, that somehow it would make me less of who I am. When I fell so deeply in love with Finn, I began to wonder what happens to us when we fall in love. Where do we end and where does the other begin? A lot of people think love is either about focusing on what’s best for others, or that self-love should come before all else. Perhaps it’s more complicated. I think the question is: when it comes to love, is it even a question of self and other, or something else entirely?
PL: Have you answered your question about what happens when we love?
ES: There was one day I was strolling in the forest with a dear old friend. The trees were so tall we could hardly see where they ended and where the sky began. That’s how it is when we truly love. We’re each still who we are, but the borders between us become harder to discern, and soon, we let go and stop looking for them. There’s so much beauty in that magical space where the trees touch the sky.
