Coming Home to the Body: The Inspiration Behind Dance of Oneness
By Banafsheh Sayyad
For much of my life, dance has been the language through which I understand the world. Long before I had the words to articulate my philosophy of embodiment, my body was already speaking—through movement, rhythm, and breath.
I began dancing as a child, not yet realizing that this form of expression would one day become the center of my life’s work. Movement felt natural to me in the way that play feels natural to a child. It was a way of inhabiting joy, curiosity, and presence. Only later would I understand how rare that sense of embodiment would become in the modern world.
As I grew older and trained as a professional dancer and choreographer, and later as a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I began to see the body through many different lenses: artistic, energetic, therapeutic, and spiritual.
Each discipline revealed something profound about what it means to be human. Yet what struck me most powerfully was how deeply the body is capable of transformation when we learn to listen.
Over time, these explorations evolved into the modality I now call Dance of Oneness®, which I have been teaching and performing for more than two decades. What emerged was not simply a technique, but what I have come to understand as a Divine Feminine lineage of embodied awakening.
Dance of Oneness® weaves together three powerful streams. The first is dance and movement technique, including Sufi whirling, Persian dance, and other devotional forms that awaken the heart and connect us to the sacred through motion.
The second arises from wisdom teachings rooted in Taoist, Sufi, and Divine Feminine traditions.
The third is healing, informed by the chakra system and my background in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which has deepened my understanding of how movement influences the body’s energetic pathways and emotional landscape. Where these three streams meet, movement becomes more than exercise or performance—it becomes a path of transformation.
In workshops and performances around the world, I witnessed this again and again. When people were invited to move—not to perform or impress, but simply to inhabit themselves—something awakened within them. Tension softened, joy surfaced, and emotions long held beneath the surface began to move and release.
People would often come up to me after workshops with tears in their eyes and say, “I feel like I’ve come home to myself.”
And yet, despite these experiences, I was also witnessing a troubling pattern in our culture. Through my travels and teaching internationally, I saw how many people felt estranged from their own bodies.
We live in a world that constantly pulls our attention outward—into screens, productivity, comparison, and endless mental activity. The body is often treated as something to control, fix, improve, or push beyond, rather than something to inhabit and listen to.
This disconnection comes at a cost. When we lose touch with the body, we lose touch with the very place where life is actually happening.
Our capacity to love, to grieve, to create, to heal, to experience beauty or awe—all of it unfolds through the body. Even our most transcendent spiritual experiences are ultimately embodied. They arise through breath, sensation, and presence.
Yet many spiritual traditions have historically emphasized transcending the body rather than entering it more fully. While those teachings hold great wisdom, I have long felt that the body is not an obstacle to awakening—it is one of its most direct gateways.
Dance reveals this truth in the most immediate way. When we dance freely and consciously, something remarkable happens. The mind softens its grip. The body begins to express what words cannot. Layers of tension, emotion, and memory begin to move. Energy flows. Creativity awakens.
In that movement, people often rediscover something they thought they had lost: the simple magic of being alive in their bodies.
Over the years, my students repeatedly asked me to gather these teachings into a book. They wanted something they could return to—a map that would guide them back into embodiment in their daily lives.
Dance of Oneness: Embody Love and Luminosity to Transform Your Life grew out of that request. But the book is not only the result of my 20 years of teaching. In many ways, it is the distillation of my entire life’s journey: my training in dance, my studies in healing traditions, my exploration of sacred movement practices, and my personal search for meaning and wholeness.
At its heart, the book offers a simple but radical invitation: to come home to the body.
Through accessible practices rooted in dance and conscious movement, readers are guided to reconnect with their physical, emotional, and energetic selves. Movement becomes a doorway into greater presence, vitality, and freedom.
I hope readers rediscover the magic of dance—not as performance, but as a natural human birthright. Dance has the power to dissolve inhibition, release stored emotions, awaken creativity, and reconnect us with our innate vitality.
When we move, we remember.
We remember the intelligence of the body.
We remember the joy of inhabiting our own skin.
We remember that life is meant to be experienced, not merely analyzed.
In a world that increasingly pulls us away from ourselves, returning to the body can be a quietly revolutionary act.
And perhaps that is the deepest inspiration behind this book: the belief that when we learn to inhabit ourselves fully—when body, heart, and consciousness come into alignment—we not only transform our own lives. We also bring a more grounded, compassionate, and luminous presence into the world.
