It always amazes me, when I look back, how a book takes shape. Ideas come from so many places—experiences, memories, people I meet and places I go—and they evolve in ways I can neither predict nor control. For me, this is the most magical, and the most difficult, part of being a writer.

The Room Next Door began with a simple question: what if two lovers having an affair overheard something violent in the room next door to theirs? The dilemma immediately intrigued me. To report what they heard would mean revealing the affair; to stay silent would mean living with the consequences. What would they choose? How would their decision shape what followed? But then—the story refused to take shape.

I carried this idea with me for years, written down on a page with others that failed to launch. Each time I tried to unlock its possibilities, I could never move beyond that first scene. And then I began writing stories exclusively for audio—and everything changed.

Audio gave me a new way to think about storytelling. Going beyond what the printed page can do, audio places the listener inside each moment in a completely immediate, immersive, and visceral way. I realized that the scene I had been holding onto for so long—the overheard sounds, the whispered debate between the lovers—could come alive in audio in a way it never could in print. The medium was not just a vehicle for the story; it was the missing key I needed to unlock the rest of the narrative.

Once I committed to telling it, the story began to expand. I no longer saw just a premise, but an unfolding arc, a progression of secrets, and three distinct characters who would tell their individual stories and connect to one another. I began to see twists that would sustain the suspense, including a major revelation a third of the way through that enabled me to build on the initial premise while shifting gears in both the backstory and the forward action. It’s hard to describe without spoiling the plot (and the fun), so that’s all I’ll say about that!

But The Room Next Door is more than just a premise and a plot. It’s a novel written in a unique way, carefully designed to be an incredible listening experience. From writing and executive producing my last audio original, Mad Love, I learned the craft of storytelling in an audio-first format. When a story is heard rather than read, it’s experienced differently. While it can be very enjoyable to listen to a book written for print and then read by a skilled performer, I wanted to go beyond that experience to something even greater.

I decided to write the novel from the very first word in a way that utilized the best parts of the audio experience. I had some of the writing tools from all three of my prior audio originals, Hold Your Breath, American Girl and Mad Love, but I knew I would be learning new ones as I went along. I started with a seamless narration—three characters telling us their stories as though we are right there with them. Next, I layered in fully scripted dialogue, which allowed us to cast thirty-three actors and audio performers, each one bringing a character to life in a way that made them vividly real. As a producer, I was at all of the recording sessions, changing the script in the moment where I saw a chance to make it better. 

We then added sound design in a way that would fully immerse listeners without detracting from the intimacy of the storytelling. Subtle effects—the echo of footsteps, the faint sound of voices through a wall, the opening and closing of doors—added texture and realism. Finally, during production, we brought original music into carefully chosen scenes, using it to underscore mood, ease transitions, and heighten emotional resonance. These choices created a listening experience that fully envelop the audience in the world of the story.

Most importantly, the plot, structure, and production of The Room Next Door all enhance the story’s emotional depth. Suspense can drive a narrative, but it’s the characters—their vulnerabilities, their betrayals, their impossible choices—that keep people listening.

The journey of The Room Next Door was, for me, a reminder that some stories wait for the right form. What began as a single, haunting question grew into a layered, suspenseful thriller that invites listeners not only to follow the twists, but to inhabit the world themselves. And it all began with two lovers, a secret, and the sounds coming from the room next door.
