How to get published the mindful way

Whether you are starting out as a writer, querying agents, or have a publishing contract, you will have experienced the highs and lows of this writing life. Social media is full of ecstasy and angst. ‘OMG I’ve had two full MS requests.’ ‘I’m so excited, an agent has just signed me.’ ‘Another rejection.’ ‘I don’t know what I’ll do if I don’t get a contract.’

I could have written all of these at some point in my writing career. My heart aches when I read the hope/expectation and the pain of fellow writers. When we want something so much, we hand over control for our happiness and well-being.

I was on this emotional roller-coaster in 2018 when I decided to meditate every day. It was Lent, and I thought 40 days of meditation might help me cope with the angst as I waited to hear if my novel, which was out on submission, would result in a publishing contract. Five years later, I am still meditating every day. This practice, alongside journaling, helped me to take back control for my happiness and well-being. I shared my insights on this journey in my blog www.abrakdeborah.wordpress.com  But I could only get so far on my own; I wanted to learn from other writers and so last year I recorded interviews on The Mindful Writer Podcast.

Each week I chat with a guest exploring the psychological, emotional, and spiritual journey they have experienced as a writer, the lessons they have learnt – and are continuing to learn.

As I talk to other writers and reflect on my experience, I hope to discover how we might find abundance in our creative pursuits, achieving our goals the mindful way.

I have chatted with some amazing guests. Their words of wisdom continue to uplift and inspire me.

I have learnt:

  • To be happy and fulfilled with where I am right now in my writing journey.
  • To be excited by the myriad of possible outcomes that will lead to my success.
  • To make full use of my time and energy to learn, grow, and fulfil my potential.
  • To lead the writing life I dream of.

In my blog and the podcast, we cover topics such as:

  • Fear of failure
  • Self-care
  • Focusing on what is within our control
  • Trusting the journey
  • Being open to possibility and not attaching to one outcome
  • Cyclical living – being in tune with seasonal change
  • Writer’s block
  • Rejection
  • Imposter syndrome
  • Comparing self to others

I would love other writers to benefit from the wisdom of my guests and from my experience as I continue to learn and grow.

I am always looking for new, inspirational guests. So, if this is a topic that interests you and you have learning to share, please contact me dkauthor@btinternet.com

And don’t forget to check out The Mindful Writer podcast.

  1. Hello Deborah- I was so happy to read your post. Well done! Excellent! No wonder I enjoy your books so much.
Yesterday, I read a blog post by an author friend in which she asked readers how they take a break from writing. This morning another post by another friend- how can I stop my mind from jumping around. And then I read your post!
Thanks for a great post and I will do my best to listen to your podcast.
    Best, Jena
