Now that my first fantasy thriller, Coldharbour, has been published, people have begun to ask me how I come up with my ideas. After all, there are ghosts, demons, witches, and much more in my speculative fiction series. Well, I haven’t had to look too far for inspiration, because every day is Halloween in my life and here are just some of the ways how…
- I was born right on the Aquarius/Pisces cusp – that might not be spooky on its own, but it’s the Cusp of Sensitivity, which means creativity, intuition, and maybe just a bit of eccentricity…
- I’ve been called a vampire, which might have something to do with being naturally nocturnal and allergic to garlic. Oh, and I have extra fangs behind my canines.
- I live in a haunted house. I’ve lived in other haunted houses. I’ve even stayed in a haunted hotel and a haunted holiday home: think fog, inexplicable sounds, and screaming nightmares.
- I love British seaside towns – the more desolate and decayed, the better. They’re beautiful and lonely and the most common accent you’ll hear there is my own (Estuary English).
- My favourite authors are Shirley Jackson, Julia Armfield, and Daphne du Maurier, all known for spinechilling, evocative stories full of atmosphere – and maybe one or two ghosts.
- When I lived in Mexico, my highlight was celebrating Day of the Dead. It’s a beautiful festival of remembrance and the churchyards are decorated with thought and care as people tell stories of their departed loved ones and share their favourite things.
- And speaking of family, mine are buried in some of London’s Magnificent Seven cemeteries, the grand Victorian graveyards full of mausoleums, weeping angels, and famous faces. Other relatives, including my parents, have been ghost-hunters. Because our own ghosts aren’t enough, clearly.
