What Makes You Pick Up A Book?
What makes you pick up a book and read it? The cover? The blurb? The title?
— Women Writers (@WomenWriters) December 3, 2014
@WomenWriters Cover, recommendations, sometimes award thingies on the front, author’s name…many, many things.
— Heather Wheat (@hwheaties) December 3, 2014
@WomenWriters An interest in the subject matter, the title, and the endorsements. An eye-catching spine or cover helps too.
— Zoe Kessler (@ChickADD44) December 3, 2014
@WomenWriters None of the above. The story's location; the author's nationality.

@WomenWriters Author, title, blurb… or sometimes just looking for something different.
— Alison McKeating (@AFMcKeating) December 3, 2014
@WomenWriters rarely the blurb
— Jax Blunt (@liveotherwise) December 3, 2014
@WomenWriters really. I try not to read it. I might check out reviews, and I listen to the buzz on twitter. Covers attract me 🙂
— Jax Blunt (@liveotherwise) December 3, 2014
@liveotherwise @WomenWriters I hate blurbs: too generic. I choose books based on reviews, subject matter, friend recs, first couple pages…
— melanie (@mbfparergon) December 3, 2014
@liveotherwise Same here. I don't actively avoid them, but title/cover/author/reviews it is for me as well – in that order, @WomenWriters
— Morgan A. Pryce (@morgan_pryce) December 3, 2014
@WomenWriters Often I choose a book on no more than a feeling that a certain story needs to be told at that particular time in my life..
— Writerful (@writerful) December 3, 2014
@WomenWriters Genre. New stuff by a beloved author. Research. Subject matter. Coincidence. Recommendation. #InThatOrder

I keep missing these on Twitter! I echo the above and just clicked on an interesting thing on the internet – the “Page 69” test. The theory is, open any book to page 69 and if you like the writing on that page, you will enjoy the book. I’ve tried it recently with a couple of books I just finished and one I’m in the middle of and it worked but that might just have been coincidence. I’m going to give it a try in the bookstore and library next time.
